Mobile Communications - Motorola Restructuring in Jan. 2005
December 20, 2004
Motorola has drawn up a more concrete plan to restructure its company, after making a preliminary announcement in July 2004. The US-based wireless player will be performing a company-wide reorganization of businesses and functions starting in January 2005, based on its "Seamless Mobility" strategy. The reorganization should see completion in the first quarter of 2005.

As is the trend among telecommunications vendors seeking more flexibility and profit, Motorola aims to make its production and infrastructure-supplying businesses more service oriented. The "Seamless Mobility" plan will bring Motorola to focus on four key segments, including personal devices, government and enterprise, home, and networks. The government and enterprise sector, originally named the commercial, government and industrial solutions sector, will be focusing more on enterprises in the future, with an enterprise business development group added to the sector.

Major support functions will be designed centrally and distributed throughout the firm. These key functions include: supply chain operations, information technology, human resources, strategy and business development, legal, finance, marketing, technology and quality. A new organization will be set up to supervise the supply chain operations, which encompasses production, procurement, and distribution worldwide. Meanwhile, the company will also endeavor to strengthen the consistency in its information technology systems.
